A Dream of Winter
Day breaks with a blast of pale lemon sun
Crackling with promise and piercing clarity
As candy floss whisps of frozen whistles
And gasped breaths linger in glassy air.
Spider webs dangle, laced with icing sugar frost,
Glistening crystalline grass crunches underfoot,
Whilst birds soar above in fresh baby blue skies.
Eyes water, startled by winter’s barbed breath
To view the world in sharp focus -
Light and shade dance along the spines
Of fossilised leaves strewn over icy paths.
All is held spellbound in winter’s dream -Â
As though a magical wizard wavedÂ
A starry wand and whirled away,
Leaving trails of stardust behind,
Gleaming in the emerald eyes
Of the chilled cat twirling a tabby tailÂ
Nonchalantly along a neighbour’s wall
As if there’s nothing to see here at all.
